Make Money and Save More Money
By Jessica Baseler

If you were to see how much money you spend on things you rarely use you would realize where your money has been going. Next time you go to buy something, ask yourself if you will want it or the cash six months from now. If you choose the cash, put the saved amount into your account at the credit union.

If your first job leaves you with little cash, but lots of time – get a second job. It can be something as small as washing cars, or mowing lawns. Jobs like these are everywhere. To get started ask your neighbors if they need any help doing things. To find other clients put signs up listing your skills and jobs you would be interested in doing. Just be sure to take your parents with you if you’re interviewing with strangers in the neighborhood. Save all of the money from your second job and put it in your savings account.

Money spent on everyday unessential items can really add up. Write a list of everything you buy on a regular basis. Make a plan to skip every other purchase. For instance, if you buy a bag of chips every day, change it so you only buy one every other day. Or buy the cheaper bag of chips. Either way you'll save and that money can go into your savings account.

Change seems so small, but it can really add up to a lot of money! Use only bills when you buy something, and save the change. Put all the change into a jar. After the jar is filled up take it to the credit union. When you see just how much you saved, you'll want to start all over again!

Other tips to make and save more money:

  • Find the cheapest gas station. Why? Paying just 1 cent less per litre can save you about $1 a tank if you have a 80 litre gas tank.
  • Instead of buying movies, or renting them for about $3 bucks. Rent them for free at your local library.
  • Have a yard sale with friends. Try and make a $1 table, where everything is just $1. With 100 objects sold for $1 you'll make $100!

Kenneth brings up a very good point. Before you agree to working for a neighbor, be sure that they know you are expecting to get paid. When you offer your services agree on an hourly wage with your neighbor, or offer a certain number of services for one overall fee. For example, you'll work for $7.00 an hour, or you'll weed their yard, paint their garage, and mow their lawn for $100. Don't do any work until you have reached a payment agreement with your neighbor. This prevents any misunderstandings and ensures that you don't do hours of work for free.
