| The Day I Took on A New Responsibility |
| By Amanda Brown |
My life was just like any other 14 year old girl, staying up late, hanging out with friends, and worrying if my clothes and make-up looked alright. But my life was soon to change as I took on a new responsibility. My brother-in-law had just become a volunteer firefighter and I thought it was really cool and brave of him to risk his life for people he didn't even know. I wanted to follow in his footsteps, so when he came home one day and asked me if I wanted to be a junior firefighter, I quickly agreed. I really had no idea what kind of commitment I was taking on. I went to training and meetings and soon I was putting on my gear and going on fire runs. Although I didn't get to go on a lot of calls, it was still really fun going to the fire station and hanging out. As time progressed I learned a lot and realized that I couldn't be as girlie as I had been. I used to put on make-up to go to training, and at the time I didn't realize that I was sweating in my gear and that was just wiping it all off anyways. I lost a lot of friends and some boyfriends because of my dedication to the fire station, but I will never regret the decision I made to get involved in firefighting. It was hard going to training on school nights because I was so exhausted that I woke up in the mornings and had to drag myself to school. But all my hard work will eventually pay off, because as soon as I turn 17 I can go to fire class and become a firefighter before I graduate! I also really like the idea that I am helping people. This is my way of giving back to the community. |
